Golden Boy Pres. says Canelo is bigger draw than Golovkin
September 25, 2016
It’s no secret that Gennady Golovkin vs. Canelo Alvarez is the fight everyone wants to see, being called “The Super Bowl of Boxing. Both fighters are at the top of their games and each have tons of rabid fans that think the opponent would be crushed by the other. However, Golden Boy President Eric Gomez has a slightly different viewpoint.
“I could come up with 10 or 20 points that prove Canelo is … by far the bigger draw,” said Gomez to the latimes.com. “don’t want to negotiate in the media, but if they want to discuss the rest of the points, come over, sit down. We’re serious about making the fight. No excuses to get out of it. We’re willing to make the fight. The notion we’re scared is ridiculous. Call our bluff. We’re ready to make the fight.”
Gomez refuses to give Golovkin a percentage cut of the revenue from the fight, only agreeing to give him a flat fee, based on the thought that Canelo would be bringing in most of the viewership. His offer is $12 million flat plus a percentage split of the pay-per-view.
“Take this offer. It’s the most money Golovkin’s ever made,” said Gomez.
To me, this sounds like Golden Boy (or maybe Canelo) doesn’t want to get this fight done, and it isn’t a serious offer based on how big this fight could be. It’s clear that Golovkin would bring in a a huge draw of his own, and certainly deserves to make a comparable amount to Alvarez. As much as I would love to see the fight, I don’t see any way that Golovkin should agree to this.
What do you think? Should Golovkin take the deal? Is Alvarez’s camp lowballing Golovkin in order to continue ducking?
